My First Granny Square Afghan

I started this afghan without a real plan. ๐Ÿ™‚ I had some extra baby-weight yarn, & started crocheting it as a granny square. I got distracted and let it sit for several years before I resumed work on it. I don’t remember when I started it, but based on some of the colors that I used in the center, it may have been around 2007. I finished the afghan in 2015. The finished size is 78 x 78″.

I used the Bernat baby boucle yarn. That yarn has shiny thread strands wrapped around the yarn, so it has a bit of subtle sparkle. I quickly learned that baby-weight yarn takes a very, very, very long time to make into an afghan large enough to fit a full or double-sized bed! I used lots of pastel colors, including some variegated yarn. I didn’t keep track of how many skeins of yarn I used, but it was a lot!

The “body” of the afghan is one huge granny square. I did 86 rounds to make it large enough. I stitched 1 to 4 rounds of each color, but usually 2 or 3 rounds. As the rounds got larger, there were a few times when I needed to change yarn partway through a round because a skein ran out and I didn’t want to buy another skein of that color. ๐Ÿ™‚

I found the border design on Pinterest. It’s 6 rounds. It’s from the “All Shawl” pattern on Ravelry, by Doris Chan. The pin that I found took me to a blog post by Ellen Bloom, and that blog post shows the border design clearly. Mine ended up ruffling a bit, which I hadn’t planned but I like how feminine and pretty it looks for such a delicate pastel afghan!

Happy stitching!
