Cover photo: Rose Bouquet from Book 39, Paula Vaughan’s Rose Garden. Stitched by me onto an “Anne Cloth” afghan.
This post includes the designs featured in books 31-40 of Paula Vaughan’s cross-stitch designs. To see the rest of her work, and to read my hints for finding these out-of-print patterns, please visit my main Paula Vaughan post.
Book 31: Friendship Quilts. This design features a farmhouse porch, with a barn and some blooming trees – possibly Redbuds or pink Dogwoods – visible across the yard. A wooden porch swing holds a couple of quilts, one of which looks like a Square-in-a-Square block and the other might be a Double Wedding Ring with very thin “rings.” A green wooden chair holds a quilt that may be the Shoofly block. A Lemoyne Star quilt and a Double Wedding Ring quilt hang over the porch railing. Published in 1989.
Book 32: Sisters Three. This design features three old-fashioned dresses displayed in an upstairs room with floral striped wallpaper. A pink dress is on a dress form. A green dress is hanging in a chifforobe. The quilt hanging over the door of the chifforobe is a Dresden Plate. The chifforobe also holds a black purse with a rose on it and a straw hat. On the floor, a trunk holds a blue dress. A box beside the trunk holds what appears to be a straw hat, and another straw hat is on the floor beside that box, along with a pair of shoes and what I assume is another hat box. Published in 1990.
Book 33: In the Garret. This design has four old-fashioned dresses, displayed in an upstairs room with floral wallpaper. A tree’s branches are visible through the window, and a suncatcher is hung on the window. A sampler hangs on the wall above the top of the stairs. A yellow dress hangs on a nail in the window frame. A blue dress and a white dress are on dress forms. I’m not sure what is behind the white dress – possibly a basket with a floral-appliqued lining but a handle poking up through the lining? A trunk holds a pink dress. The scene also includes a straw hat, a straw bonnet on top of a hat box, a white parasol, a book, some letters, a pair of boots, and something white with a blue ribbon bow. Published in 1990.
Book 34: Memories of Christmas. This design features a room with floral wallpaper. Through the window, you can see tree branches or a bush, and a barn the snow-covered yarn. A trunk holds a Santa, a tray of ornaments, and a quilt. I’m not familiar with the quilt design – if you recognize it, could you please leave the name in a comment so I can include it here? It might be a pinwheel variation. It reminds me of a peppermint candy! A wooden rocking chair holds a doll, a stocking, and a strap with jingle bells. On the floor, I see a toy drum, a couple rolls of wrapping paper and a red ribbon, a small church, a train, and an old-fashioned top with a string. This was the first of two Christmas-themed designs. (The second is December in Quilts For All Seasons.) Published in 1990.
Book 35: Cherished Moments. This beautiful design showcases a porcelain pitcher with a bouquet of pink roses and other pink flowers. A smaller pitcher holds what looks like light purple violets. A small box on the table holds a white hanky and a few other things that I can’t confidently identify. A book and a tied-up bundle of letters rest on the ribbon coming off a spool. Published in 1990.
Book 36: Sunlight and Silhouettes. This scene shows a bedroom with floral wallpaper. A pair of silhouette portraits hang on the wall. French doors open to a yard with flowering shrubs, a rose bush, and a gazebo. The bed frame appears to be wrought iron with brass accents. The quilt on the bed is a Dresden Plate. At the foot of the bed, a trunk holds an old-fashioned green dress. A dress form holds a pink and blue plaid dress, and a large mirror behind the dress reflects the back of the dress. A straw hat with a blue ribbon hands on the side of the mirror. A green wicker rocking chair holds a white dress or slip, and a hat box sits on the floor beside an oval rug with roses. Published in 1990.
Book 37: Poems and Promises. This focal point of this design features a basket holding flowers – yellow and pink roses, plus some other white and blue flowers. On the table around the basket, a pitcher holds more flowers, and a teapot and a sugar bowl are waiting their turns to be used as vases. A pair of scissors and some white gloves also sit on the table. A blue-covered book sits beside the gloves, presumably a book of poems as the design’s name implies, although no text appears on the book. Published in 1990.
Book 38: The Porch Swing. This design shows a front porch with elaborate wooden trim painted white. Roses are growing in the yard behind the porch. Through the house window, you can see a birdcage and a couple of flower pots. A white wicker porch swing holds pillows and something that might be a folded-up quilt. A white wicker table holds a basket of flowers and some type of cloth draped over it. A green rocking chair holds a pillow and a straw hat. Both the swing and chair have blue floral-print cushions. (This design makes me want to grab a glass of cold iced tea or lemonade and sit for a spell!) Published in 1990.
Book 39: Paula’s Rose Garden. Rather than one large scene, this book includes patterns for six small designs. Yellow Rose is shown on the Anne Cloth afghan on the front cover and as a pincushion or small pillow on the back cover. Hat With Flowers is stitched onto a sweatshirt on the front cover, using waste canvas, and as a pillow on the back cover. Bouquet is framed on the front cover, and stitched onto a pre-woven “afghan” on the back cover. Trellis is framed on the front cover. Pink Rose is shown on the afghan and as a jar lid on the front cover, and set into the little curio shelf on the back cover. Rose Border is shown the back cover stitched onto a pre-woven afghan and on a tea towel, probably using waste canvas. The booklet includes information about the waste canvas and Anne Cloth afghans used. (Since cross-stitching isn’t as popular now as it was in the 1980s to 1990s, you may need to adapt the Anne Cloth ideas to what is currently available.) Published in 1991.
Book 40: Spring Remembered Part I. This fence scene features a white wooden gate with a heart on top of the post. The quilt draped over the barbed-wire fence is a Double Wedding Ring. (If you stitch this, consider omitting the “barbs” on the fence so that the quilt won’t get torn on them! Yes, I know it’s just a stitched design, but it still makes me feel nervous!) Purple, pink, white, and orange irises grow along the fence, and pink roses bloom behind it. A straw hat with a pink rose and a blue ribbon rests on the quilt. Beside the quilt, a brown basket holds cut flowers. Published in 1991.
Happy Stitching!
