This post includes the designs featured in books 71-80 of Paula Vaughan’s cross-stitch designs. To see the rest of her work, and to read my hints for finding these out-of-print patterns, please visit my main Paula Vaughan post.
To change the skin or hair color of the people featured in some of these designs, search for skin tone charts online. (If you find one that is especially helpful, please let me know!) You’ll need several shades to take advantage of the highlights and shadows. Some designs include reflections in mirrors, so be sure to change the reflection as well. Several of the books on this page also include cats, and one has a dog, so you could change the colors of the pets as well.
Book 71: Granny’s Attic. This design shows two girls playing dress-up in their grandmother’s attic. Each girl is wearing a fancy, old-fashioned dress that is too long. One is also wearing a blue hat with roses. A large mirror shows a reflection of their grandmother. A large trunk holds a quilt, a bundle of letters, and two cats. Around the attic, we see a book, another cat playing with a hatbox, a rolled-up floral rug, a sewing basket, a treadle sewing machine, a few framed pictures, a fancy chair holding a hatbox, and a pitcher and basin. Published in 1999.
Book 72: Preserved in Time. This book includes ten designs that were previously published in magazines or as a Cross Stitch Lite. This book has its own post to show all of the designs – click or tap the name of the book to jump to that page. Published in 2000.
Book 73: A Mother’s Love. This book features nine designs focused on mothers and daughters. This book has its own post to show all of the designs – click or tap the name of the book to jump to that page. Published in 2000.
Book 74: Sisters. This scene shows two girls having a tea party. They are wearing over-sized fancy old-fashioned dresses. Both girls are also wearing straw hats, and one girl is wearing a pearl necklace while the other had a pretty purse over her arm, oversized fancy gloves, and high-heeled shoes that are several sizes too large. The table beside the girls is covered with a cloth that has an embroidered vine around the edges, with the rest of the tea set. A doll sits on the floor, with a straw hat on her lap. Another straw hat sits on the floor beside the doll. A trunk holds a cloth with a teardrop border and a vine embroidered on it. A chifforobe in the background holds a kerosene lamp, a candlestick, some linens decorated with flowers, and several books. Published in 2000.
Book 75: Victory Garden. During World War II in the 1940s, Americans were encouraged to grow their own food at home, allowing the country’s commercial food production to go to the war effort. These were called Victory Gardens. This design shows a front porch with elaborately-carved corbels. A green wooden swing holds a Dresden Plate quilt, and a sewing basket sits beside the swing with a spool of thread on the porch floor beside the basket. A potted flower is visible in the corner of the scene, and a rose bush grows beside the porch. A wooden rocking chair with a blue seat cushion holds an opened letter. In the yard beside the porch, several vegetables appear to be growing, and the white wooden fence’s gate has a sign reading “Victory Garden.” American flags hang on each side of the open gate. A road is visible, with a blue car in the distance. Several homes, a church, and a store are also visible along the road. Published in 2001.
Book 76: Quilts From the Garden. This book includes 12 designs with floral-themed quilts. This book has its own post to show all of the designs – click or tap the name of the book to jump to that page. Published in 2001.
Book 77: Gifts of Love. This bridal-themed design shows a room with the doors opened. Through the doors, a young couple stands close together in front of a rose-covered arbor, and the woman is holding a basket. A rose bush grows just beside the door. Inside, a bridal gown hangs on a dress form. A sewing basket and a couple of potted plants sit on the floor nearby. A wooden chest is open with a Rose of Sharon quilt draped over the chest and a couple more quilts stacked up in the chest. A fireplace in the background holds a vase with flowers in it. Published in 2001.
Book 78: Bedtime Prayers. This booklet contains two designs. Little Cowboy is featured on on the front cover. It shows a young boy kneeling on a blue woven rug beside his bed, with his hands folded in prayer. His yellow pajamas are printed with tiny cowboys on horses. His bed is covered with a star quilt, with a teddy bear on the bed and cowboy hat hanging on the bed post. A puppy peeks out from under the bed. A pair of cowboy boots sits beside the bed, and a picture is pinned to the wall above his bed. The picture shows a barn and a horse, and childish writing reads, “Jesus Loves Me.” Through the open window, you can see some trees, a couple of houses, and a church. Little Princess is shown on the back cover. This design shows a young girl kneeling on her window seat, looking out the window at the night sky, with her hands folded in prayer. She’s wearing a white nightgown. Through the window, you can see another house, some blossoming shrubs or trees, and stars in the sky. A picture pinned to the window frame shows two people, a couple of trees, and says, “God Is Love.” The window seat is covered with a Dresden Plate quilt. A doll, a curled-up napping cat, and a blue pillow with roses are also on the window seat. Published in 2002.
Book 79: Flowers for Mama. This design shows the front porch of a house, with green shutters beside the windows and a green wooden screen door. The door is held open by a woman in a yellow dress and white apron. On the steps, a young boy is holding a cluster of flowers that he’s picked for his mama. He’s wearing a red cap, a plaid shirt, and blue jeans. A couple of rocking chairs are visible on the sides of the porch, and flowers grow beside the porch. Published in 2002.
Book 80: Pillows from Paula’s Garden. Departing from Paula’s typical style, this book features large flowers rather than scenes or vignettes. While the book is named “Pillows,” you can use the designs in other ways. They could be framed, made into quilts, or any other project you desire. This book has its own post to show all of the designs – click or tap the name of the book to jump to that page. Published in 2003.
Happy stitching!
