Cover photo: May from Book 56, Quilts For All Seasons. Stitched by me and framed at Hobby Lobby.
This post shows the 12 designs included in Paula Vaughan’s Book 56: Quilts For All Seasons, published in 1994. I’ve included the front and back covers as well. To see the rest of her work, and to read my hints for finding these out-of-print patterns, please visit my main Paula Vaughan post.
Front cover – featuring March, August, April, and May. (I had to edit out an address label that was covering up the original price – I believe it was $19.95.)
January features a very elaborate quilt in blue and white fabrics. It reminds me of a snowflake, but with four points instead of six. I don’t know the name of the quilt block featured, so if you recognize it, please leave a comment so I can update this to include the name. The quilt is in a large hoop, and a red pincushion sits beside the hoop. A sewing basket holding fabric sits on the table beside the quilt. In the background, a window with a white ruffled curtains lets us see a barn across the snow-covered yard.
February‘s design features a wooden rocking chair with a hearts quilt draped over it. A heart-shaped pincushion hangs from the back of the chair. A sewing basket sits on the floor beside the chair, and a couple spools of thread are on the floor. A window framed with white ruffled curtains shows a tree outside.
March is a front porch scene. A wooden chair holds a Basket quilt, and a quilt with red tulips spills out of a large basket on the porch. A metal bowl or bucket beside the chair holds flowers, and an empty terra cotta pot waits to be filled with seeds. The door of the house is visible behind the quilt basket, with a fancy screen door painted green.
April shows a butterfly quilt draped over a barbed wire fence. A butterfly flies nearby. A basket filled with roses hangs from a fence post. Irises, daisies, and violets grow along the fence.
May features a white wicker rocking chair holding a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. A basket of fabric and a red pincushion sit on the ground beside the chair. In the background, irises, daisies, and violets grow beside a barbed-wire fence.
June features a clothesline holding a Double Wedding Ring quilt, a pair of overalls, and a pink floral dress. A basket of clothes sits on the ground. Flowers growing around the clothesline include pink roses, daisies, violets, and something else that I can’t identify. 🙂
July has an American patriotic theme. A wooden green swing hangs on a front porch, and holds two quilts. One is an American flag design, and the other appears to be a 9-Patch variation. A terra cotta pot on the porch holds geraniums, and roses grow beside the house.
August features a quilt with a wreath of roses. There is probably a name for this design, but I don’t know what it is. Rose of Sharon is a different arrangement, so I don’t know the name of this pattern – if you know it, please leave a comment so I can update this post! The quilt is draped over a white wooden porch railing. A metal bowl sits on the porch railing and holds yellow-orange flowers. A couple of terra cotta pots sit on the ground in front of the porch. A rose bush grows beside the porch. In the background, a window has green shutters.
September has a school theme. A Schoolhouse quilt is draped over a split-rail fence. An apple tree grows behind the fence, with a few apples on the branches and more apples on the ground. Daisies and some other white flowers that I can’t identify grow along the fence. A metal lunch pail, a slate with “ABCDE” written in chalk, and a stack of books complete the scene.
October features a Flying Geese quilt, very appropriate since October in the southern states of North America is when geese and other birds fly south for the winter. The quilt is draped over the steps leading to a front porch. A bowl of apples sits on the top step, and a few oak leaves have fallen on the steps around the quilt. A few empty flower pots appear to be waiting for the next spring’s seeds to be planted.
November‘s design features a farm wagon holding a Maple Leaf quilt in fall colors of red, orange, yellow, and brown. Pumpkins sit on the wagon and on the ground. The shrubs growing near the wagon are bare, so the leaves have already fallen off for the winter.
December is the second of Paula’s Christmas-themed designs. (The other is Book 34: Memories of Christmas.) The scene appears to be a railing on the 2nd floor of a home, perhaps beside the stairs although those aren’t visible. A quilt with appliqued poinsettias is draped over the railing, along with a jingle bells strap and a stocking. A wagon sits in front of the quilt and holds a doll resembling Raggedy Ann and a teddy bear. A green ribbon bow adorns the wagon’s handle. On the floor are a toy church, train engine, and a few tree ornaments. A framed piece on the wall behind the railing reads “Peace on Earth” and has a star. The light beams shining from the star call for gold metallic thread, but could be stitched with normal golden-yellow thread if desired.
Back cover, featuring September, December, November, and October. I used this book as I stitched the designs, so this back cover does show some significant “wear” but hopefully you can ignore that. 🙂
Happy stitching!
