Paula Vaughan’s A Mother’s Love

This post shows the nine designs included in Paula Vaughan’s Book 73: A Mother’s Love, published in 2000. I’ve included the front and back covers as well. To see the rest of her work, and to read my hints for finding these out-of-print patterns, please visit my main Paula Vaughan post.

To change the skin or hair color of the people featured in these designs, search for skin tone charts online. (If you find one that is especially helpful, please let me know!) You’ll need several shades to take advantage of the highlights and shadows. Some designs include reflections in mirrors, so be sure to change the reflection as well. One design includes a cat that could be personalized as well.

Cross-stitch design Newborn Joy from A Mother's Love

Newborn Joy shows a young mother looking at her newborn daughter in a bassinet. The mother is wearing a long white nightgown with flowers printed on the fabric, and she’s holding the paw of a brown teddy bear. The baby is wearing a long white dress. The bassinet is covered with white fabric and decorated with pink roses and pink ribbons. A window has pink and white curtains, with a vase of roses on the windowsill.

Cross-stitch design Growing In Love from A Mother's Love

Growing In Love shows a mother tucking her young daughter into bed. The mother is wearing a blue dress. The daughter has a doll with dark brown hair and a green dress. The quilt has appliqued pink flowers on it. A table beside the bed holds a pink kerosene lamp decorated with flowers.

Going to Church shows the mother and her young daughter walking to church. The church is a small white building with a wooden shingled roof and a bell in the steeple. A man is helping his wife get out of a buggy, with a brown horse just barely visible behind the couple.

Cross-stitch design Just Like Mommy from A Mother's Love

Just Like Mommy shows a young girl sitting in a wooden rocking chair, holding her doll. The girl is wearing a white dress with small pink flowers on it, and the doll is wearing a green dress. A doll cradle sits on the floor beside the chair, with a small Dresden Plate quilt draped over it. A large round rug is mostly cream-colored, with pink roses in the center and along the edge, with a darker pink border. A window with sheer white curtains shows a starry night sky outside.

Cross-stitch design Storytime from A Mother's Love

Storytime features a mother reading the book “Little Women” to her daughter. The mother is wearing a white blouse with a brown skirt, and the daughter is wearing a pink dress with a floral headband in her hair. They’re sitting on a window seat with a blue seat cushion and a green floral throw pillow. Behind them, a window with sheer white curtains shows a rose bush growing outside.

Cross-stitch design Bound By Love from A Mother's Love

Bound By Love shows a mother sewing the hem of her daughter’s dress. The mother is sitting on a large round rug that may be the same rug shown in Just Like Mommy, above. The mother is wearing a pink blouse and a purple skirt. The daughter is wearing a blue dress with white ruffles, and standing on a green ottoman while her mother sews the hem of her skirt. A basket of fabric, a pincushion, and a couple spools of thread sit on the floor beside the mother. In the background, a Singer treadle sewing machine waits near a window with white ruffled curtains.

Correction suggestion for Bound By Love in A Mother's Love

Bound By Love has an extremely rare mistake in the chart. (To my knowledge, this is the only mistake in any chart! Leisure Arts does an amazing job with their charts’ accuracy.) A symbol used in the rug and the ottoman isn’t listed in the color chart. It’s a dark green square with the # symbol. The fans at the Paula Vaughan Fan Group on Facebook suggest using DMC 561 for that symbol.

Cross-stitch design Me and My Sister from A Mother's Love

Me and My Sister shows two young girls playing dress-up. The older sister is wearing a long white dress, probably a bridal gown. The younger sister wears a blue dress that’s too large to stay up on her shoulders. Both girls are also wearing grown-up-sized shoes. In the background, a cream-colored dress hangs on the door of an armoire. The armoire’s mirror reflects a canopy bed. A parasol leans on the armoire, and a hat box sits on the floor. An open chest holds a green dress, with a pair of ladies boots on the floor beside the chest.

Cross-stitch design Her Little Red Shoes from A Mother's Love

Her Little Red Shoes shows a mother sitting on the floor, holding a pair of small red shoes and a handkerchief. She’s wearing a white blouse and a purple skirt. Her young adult daughter stands beside her, holding up a white bridal gown. A box on the floor holds a bridal veil. An opened chest holds a Double Wedding Ring quilt. Other items around the room include an empty bird cage, a framed picture of a house on the wall, a clock, a doll, a rolled-up rug, a floor lamp, and a Victrola. (If this isn’t the correct term, please let me know by leaving a comment, and I’ll update this. I’m not very familiar with the correct terminology for most antiques.)

Cross-stitch design Mama's Little Girl from A Mother's Love

Mama’s Little Girl shows the now-grown daughter getting ready for her wedding. The daughter sits in front of a dresser, wearing her bridal gown. Her mother, dressed in a long pink dress, stands behind her, holding her daughter’s veil. Reflected in the mirror are a much younger girl and her mother adjusting her collar. A canopy bed and the mirror are draped with roses. A tied bundle of letters sits on the dresser, along with a small bowl and a bottle. A cat sits on a hat box beside the dresser. A chest holds a stack of quilts. A basket of pink roses sits on the rug. The bed is covered by a quilt with appliqued roses. A bedside table is covered with a white cloth and holds a kerosene lamp.
