Cover photo: Rose Bookmark. Stitched by me and made into a bookmark.
This post shows the 29 projects included in Paula Vaughan’s Book 68: At Home With Paula Vaughan, published in 1999. I’ve included the front and back covers as well. To see the rest of her work, and to read my hints for finding these out-of-print patterns, please visit my main Paula Vaughan post.
Front cover – featuring Poetic Splendor. The cover also shows us a rare photo of Paula Vaughan with her husband Tommy.
Front Porch Welcome
Front Porch Paradise shows a front porch scene. A wooden chair holds two folded quilts, a Dresden Plate and a block that I recognize but can’t remember the name. If anyone knows the name of the blue quilt, please leave a comment so I can update this post. A green wooden porch swing holds a star quilt. If anyone knows a more specific name for that quilt block, please comment so I can include that information. A basket of fabric also sits on the porch swing. Several flower pots and bowls hold red geraniums and a fern.
Flowery Welcome Wreath is a floral sign spelling out the word WELCOME. The sample was attached to a mounting board, framed with twigs, and added to a wreath.
Living Room Lovelies
Poetic Splendor shows a teapot decorated with yellow daffodils and purple violets. A white teacup holds tea. A large basket holds pink and white roses and yellow daffodils, along with a book titled “Brilliants From Shakespeare” although most of the word “Shakespeare” is covered by flowers. The basket rests on a Double Wedding Ring quilt.
Daffodil Delights is a bouquet of daffodils and violets, tied with a pink ribbon. This looks very much like the flowers depicted on the teapot in Poetic Splendor, above.
Daffodil and Rose Bookmarks are designed to be stitched on pre-made bookmarks. When I stitched these, I couldn’t find these bookmarks at an affordable price, so I made my own. (The bookmarks currently sold at Hobby Lobby aren’t the correct size for these designs.) I stitched the designs on 28-count evenweave fabric over-2 (making the stitch count 14 per inch) then sewed lace around the edges after I’d completed the stitching.
Remembrance Album features a cluster of pink roses. The book includes directions on how to cover a purchased photo album, although you could of course use the design anywhere you wish.
Rose Bouquet Afghan features a large roses design with hot pink and light pink roses. While the sample is stitched on Anne Cloth afghan, this design could be framed, made into a quilt or pillow, or any other use that you wish.
Bedroom Treasures
Heirloom Hope Chest shows an open chest holding a Grandmother’s Flower Garden quilt. A hat box, straw hat, and basket of roses sit on the floor around the chest.
Sitting Pretty with Sweet Little Sachet and Dainty Jar. The sachet and jar lid were stitched with the Roses Alphabet. Sitting Pretty shows a white wicker rocking chair with blue cushions decorated with roses. A pink floral blanket is draped over the arm of the chair. A basket and pincushion sit on the floor. A hooped hand embroidery project with a floral design rests in the basket. White ruffled curtains frame a window that offers a view of a blue bird sitting on a tree branch outside.
Regal Rose Clock features a stitched clock face with pink rose sprays in each corner. The piece is designed to be used with purchased clock works.
The Rosebud Mini Cloth uses one of the floral corners from the clock, above.
Fancy Fan Patchwork Pillow features a single block of a Grandmother’s Fan quilt design. The fabrics are pastel colors with floral, striped, and checked designs. The piece is made into a pillow with lace and fabric ruffles. The book includes instructions on how to make the pillow.
Wild Rose Sheet Set shows a set of two pillowcases and a flat sheet. The pillowcases feature a floral design with an oval center shape. The sheet has the Roses Alphabet stitched along the top edge using waste canvas.
Milady’s Towel features a monogram stitched using the Roses Alphabet.
Rose Bouquet Sweater shows a single rose design stitched onto a purchased sweater using waste canvas.
Sewing Room Symphony
Song of the Seamstress with Violet Pincushion. Song of the Seamstress shows a Singer treadle sewing machine
Sewing Room Door Sign includes the words “Sewing Room” surrounded by a frame of purple violets. The sample was made into a sign but would also make a nice pillow, or could be framed for display in a sewing room.
Stitcher’s Companion, Violet Scissors Case, Fan Quilt Needle Case, and Dresden Plate Sachet. Stitcher’s Companion shows a Singer treadle sewing machine with pink cloth under the needle. A pincushion, spool of thread, and a pot of violets sit on the sewing desk, while a piece of lace hangs out of a drawer. It was mounted to a Shaker box lid. The Violet Scissors Case uses design #2 from the Sewing Accessories pattern page, featuring two small violet blossoms. The Fan Quilt Needle Case is a smaller version of the Grandmother’s Fan quilt block that was used to make a pillow, above. The Dresden Plate Sachet is being used as a pincushion. The book includes instructions to make all of these accessories.
Garden Glories
Inviting Gateway features a white wooden fence with flowers growing along it. A straw hat lies on the ground beside the path. A basket of flowers hangs on the gate The gate is open, allowing a glimpse of more flowers growing in the distance.
Enchanting Moments shows a straw hat lying on the ground in front of a flower bed with a variety of flowers growing. The hat is decorated with flowers and a blue ribbon bow. A garden trowel lies beside the hat.
“Touch but the Latch, Friend” Garden Sign reads “Touch but the latch, friend. The gate will swing wide for you.” The words are framed by Black-Eyed Susans and Gladiolas as well as a few small blue flowers that I can’t identify. The sample was stretched around foam board and framed with twigs.
Back Cover
The back cover features Flowery Welcome Wreath, Sitting Pretty, Rose Bouquet Afghan, Front Porch Paradise, Sewing Room Door Sign, and Enchanting Moments.
Happy stitching!
